Hericium Erinaceum (猴头菇）
Hericium erinaceum is an edible mushroom, and its fruiting bodies have been used for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastric ulcer and enervation as a Chinese medicine in China.
Recently, Hericium erinaceum has been reported to show antitumor action and antidiabetic activity. Also, hericenones and erinacines, which were isolated from Hericium erinaceum, have potent stimulating activity for nerve-growth factor (NGF) synthesis.
Moreover, Hericium erinaceum has antioxidant properties and reduce platelet aggregation. In the present study, reseachers in Japan investigated the neuroprotective effect of Hericium erinaceum on the ischemic brain damage in a middle cerebral artery occulusion (MCAO) model in mice. Hericium erinaceum (300 mg/kg, continuous 14-day p.o.) significantly decreased the size of the cerebral infarcts 1 day after the occulusion (4 h). These results suggest that Hericium erinaceum provides neuroprotection against focal cerebral ischemia and may be clinically useful for preventing cerebral infarction.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is closely related to Alzheimer's dementia, and studies have suggested that the disease may be prevented or its symptoms may be improved when NGF is given into the brain directly. However, since NGF is a protein it usually cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier. Recently, researchers have targeted on the substances that could pass through the blood-brain barrier and induce NGF synthesis in the brain. Some compounds with lower molecular weight have been found to have such bioactivity. Among these bioactive compounds, hericenones and erinacines, which were isolated from an edible mushroom called as Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceum), showed remarkable activity of stimulating the synthesis of NGF. They could be developed as a dietary supplement or medicine to be used for treating Alzheimer's dementia. This article offers an introduction to the isolation method, bioactivity assay and chemical structure analysis of hericenones and erinacines.
总论：发现和分离出生长因子(for the discoveries of growth factors)就是一项伟大的工作。为此，两名科学家：美国的斯坦利•科恩（Stanley Cohen）和美籍意大利裔的丽塔•莱维-蒙塔尔齐尼(Rita Levi - Montalcini )分享了1986年度的诺贝尔医学奖 (The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1986) 。而发现猴头菇中的活性物质可以诱导生成神经生长因子（Nerve Growth Factor-NGF）则更是一项伟大和艰巨的任务。
神经生长因子(NGF)与阿尔茨海默氏（Alzheimer）痴呆症紧密相关, 该研究指出, 当把神经生长因子直接输入大脑时，可以预防该疾病和改善其症状。研究发现,由于神经生长因子的分子量较高，使它无法通过血-脑屏障(blood-brain barrier)进入大脑。而,研究人员在猴头菇中找到了两种物质，它们具有较低分子量和生物活性，可以自由地通过血-脑屏障，同时在大脑中促使神经生长因子的合成。这种低分子量和具有生物活性的化合物被称为猴头菇酮（hericenones）和猴头菇素（erinacines）。它们是从猴头菇(Hericium erinaceum)中分离出来的。根据它们的这种作用，猴头菇可用来开发针对阿尔茨海默氏痴呆症等病状的饮食补充物或药品。此文章描述了猴头菇酮和猴头菇素的分离方法, 生物活性及其化学结构。
