Potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, manganese, selenium, zinc and many important vitamins (E, B1, B2, B6, C, A and D).

The detailed composition:

Linoleic acid
Linoleic acid is vitally necessary and has a positive effect on cholesterol levels. It also reacts with amino acids that contain sulfur, important for the cell respiration. It is possible that linoleic acid helps in cancer prevention. Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid.

Selenium, Zinc, Potassium
These minerals and trace elements strengthen the bladder muscles and soothes them when irritated. Potassium is diuretic. The high proportion of phytosterines aids in keeping the prostate gland healthy.

Carotenoids
Carotenoides are beneficial in treating malfunctions of the bladder and the urinary passages.

Vitamin B
Vitamin B complex is important for the nervous system and metabolic processes.

Vitamin E
The high content of the vitamin E has a positive effect on heart and circulatory, aids in preventing premature births, muscle loss and menopause problems.

Amino acids
Cucurbitin protects the body from tapeworms. Citrulline accelerates the reduction of ammonia. This drains the tissues and facilitates the reduction of swelling.

Cold pressed?

Oils are considered cold pressed, if they are not heated over 60 °C (140 °F). For the production of pumpkinseed oil the seed mash is heated up to approximately 58 to 65 °C (136 to 149 °F). This is necessary to bring about the typical flavour. The pumpkinseed oil nevertheless retains all the advantages of a cold pressed oil.

Improve potency?

Yes, pumpkinseed oil has the reputation of improving potency, though scientific evidence are still outstanding.

About the process

Pumpkinseed oil is made of the skinless seeds of a special type of pumpkin, the Styrian Oil Pumpkin (lat. Cucurbita pepo. Var. styriaca, also known as var. oleifera).

The special feature of this pumpkin type are its non-stringy seed skins.

The so called "Styrian Wine Climate" and the clay soil in southeastern Austria (Styria, Southern Burgenland) provides perfect growing conditions for the oil pumpkin. Here it ripes all summer long with much sun.

The seeds are peeled out of the pulp mostly manually. This process takes some weeks to complete. The peeling is often a family celebration in the field with grandmother and grandchild working together.

Cleaned and sorted seeds are now dried, ground and roasted at low temperature.

This secret process preserves the oil and brings out its unique nutty taste.

The roast process is crucial. Some minutes or some degrees more, and the taste is completely different. Like coffee is getting different tastes by roasting, also here it is a question of the roaster's experience, and of course a question of the traditional secret recipe.

This mash now is the basis for the oil. With a pressure of around 300 bar it is pressed. At last the oil emerges dark green:  The Pumpkinseed Oil.

About the handling of pumpkinseed oil…

Oil Spots
If your garment or your table-cloth gets stained don't try to wash it out. Just hang it in the sunlight and the spots disappear after a short time.

Store the oil
Pumpkinseed oil is very sensitive to light. Keep it cool but not too cold. Always keep it protected from light.

Salad
If you dress the salad with pumpkinseed oil, first use the oil and then the other ingredients (vinegar, etc.). The pumpkinseed oil then adheres better to the salad.
Never put salad dressed with pumpkinseed oil in the sunlight. The oil might coagulate within a few minutes.

Temperature
Pumpkinseed oil may be heated for a short time and will still retain its typical nutty taste.

Cracked Hands
Red cracked hands are not only looking ugly, they also hurt because of the wounded skin. Here a mixture of pumpkinseed oil and sunflower oil may help. Mix both oils equal. Then plunge your hands in the oil and work in gently.

The oils contain valuable vitamins as A and E and moisturising ingredients. The hand cure should work approximately one hour. To have a better result you may put on gloves.

Back pain and muscle strain
A relaxation oil, made of ginger, marjoram and pumpkinseed oil is to ease pain and to relax. Simply add small ginger bits and marjoram into warm pumpkinseed oil and warm it up (but do not boil!). Leave this mixture for ten minutes and put it on the hurting places for approx. ten minutes with a gentle massage. The skin will heat up, and this strengthens the blood circulation and helps to relax.
